LA laundry. #stilllife #losangeles #insta_losangeles
Back in the day, before phones even had cameras, I had a clunky plastic Holga Toy camera that took 120 film. You could get Kodak, Ilford, and beautiful color Fuji film for this thing really easily down at the Samy’s Camera on Fairfax, and I took shots of places that largely aren’t around anymore.
Included here are a shot of the old New Beverly Cinema before Tarantino bought it. That place was my church. It had old shitty seats and sticky floors, and two crappy old speakers on either side of the screen. It was pretty common to walk in with a can or two of beer, and you could often hear them drop and hit the floor during a show. You can also spot old phone booths at El Coyote, and the old Rocket Video on LaBrea. Irv’s Burgers, which was a landmark on Santa Monica Blvd is long gone, along with Cowboyz, which was a used cowboy boot and denim shop across from Swingers, and is now just a parking lot. The ld pet store on Beverly Blvd that I think was there since the 1950’s is also no longer there. Also, included is a cheated shot (not the Holga) of the interior of the now closed Cafe 101 featured in Swingers, and a cute shot of a kid mooning the world on Hollywood Blvd. There used to be a small used muscle car lot on Melrose Ave. close to the Stir Crazy coffee shop. I lived right across the street of it. I tried to catch a shot of the old guy on one of those electric scooter wheelchairs going by, and it ended up being a weird double-exposure of him and the car lot that I threw in here as well.
A lot of the old school trashy but soulful parts of Hollywood and LA are being bulldozed for condos, so I thought I’d leave just a little bit of vintage Los Angeles for us all to remember here. Enjoy.
